Main Range Australia ⁕ Ngarigo Country

Designed for skiers and boarders looking to expand their skills.

Looking to fast-track your backcountry skills — and actually apply what you learn? This three-day immersion is your launchpad. You’ll join a small group, travel with the same expert K7 guide each day, and build real confidence through hands-on experience across varied snow conditions and terrain. It’s designed to get you thinking like a guide — reading weather, understanding its affects on snowpack, and making smart decisions on how to stay safe and have fun.

Summit and Ski

The Snowy Mountains offer one of the most beginner-friendly backcountry environments in the world. With vast open terrain, low-angle slopes, and variable snow conditions to practice on, it’s the perfect place to build confidence without the high risks of more technical alpine zones.

Each day, you and your guide will choose the best access point based on weather and snowpack — whether that’s heading out from Guthega, Thredbo, Perisher. You’ll learn how to move through the mountains safely, interpret conditions, and make sound decisions — all while travelling with a small crew from first light to last tracks.

Our Guides

Chess and Hamish bring years of mountain experience, sharp decision-making skills, and an infectious love for the alpine.

Chess — known for her feature in the backcountry film MAVEN — is a qualified ski instructor and intuitive coach, focused on helping you grow confidence and capability on snow. Hamish blends technical expertise with calm leadership and is known for creating great energy within any group.

They’ll guide you through the Main Range with clarity, care, and just the right mix of challenge and support — helping you get the most from your backcountry journey.

FAQs

Who is this expedition for?

The Backcountry Immersion Tour is ideal for curious outdoor enthusiasts — skiers or splitboarders— who are ready to build their skills and confidence in real alpine terrain. You don’t need prior backcountry experience, but you should be comfortable being outside all day and keen to learn through doing. This experience is designed to meet you where you're at and help you take the next step in your touring journey.

What distances and elevation can I expect during the retreat?

Each day involves 5–12 km of touring with moderate elevation gain, depending on weather, terrain selection, and the group’s pace. Expect a steady rhythm with lots of breaks, tailored coaching, and expert guidance to help you travel efficiently and confidently through the backcountry.

What do I need to bring?

You’ll need to bring or rent your own personal ski touring or splitboarding gear, clothing layers, and day-touring essentials. We’ll send you a detailed packing list after booking and can point you in the right direction if you need help sourcing or renting equipment. Avalanche safety gear and K7 avalanche packs are provided for the tour.

How big will the group be?

Backcountry Immersion Tours run with a small group of 3–5 people. This ensures a low guide-to-guest ratio, a strong sense of community, and plenty of tailored support as you develop your skills across the three days.

How do I get there?

Base yourself in Jindabyne. Each morning, we’ll provide shuttle transport to and from the trailhead — so you can focus on the adventure ahead, not the logistics.

Can I skip any activities?

While the day-touring will follow a rough itinerary, you’re welcome to take breaks, sit out sessions, or adjust your experience to match your energy levels. This is your adventure, and we want you to enjoy it at your own pace.

We will try our best to match groups with people of similar experience and fitness level.
